When it Comes to Health Care Mandate – Romney More Conservative Than Gingrich

As recently as 2009 Newt Gingrich was advocating a “must-have”  individual mandate pertaining to health-care.  Listen to his position in his own words – particularly around the 25-second mark:

The primary difference between Mr. Gingrich and Mitt Romney on this particular issue though is that as governor, Mitt Romney was utilizing a state’s right platform upon which to implement Massachusetts own health-care program.   Newt Gingrich appears to not have made a distinction between a federal mandate, and a mandate exclusive to residents of a particular state.  In that sense, Romney’s position is actually far more conservative than that of Gingrich’s. – a rather odd scenario given the perception that Gingrich is the “conservative alternative” to Romney.

Both men have of course indicated a strong desire to repeal Obamacare, and both would likely prove good on their word. The political pressure to attempt anything less would be considerable. Both men would also certainly prove far more effective free market presidents than Barack Obama.

    • Ulsterman, you should have posted the entire audio. This one appears to be spliced and put together by an amateur.

Romney is Obama Lite. Gingrich has his rino ways but bay far more conservative than
Romney any day of the week.

      Need I say more?

    • I agree, a romney vote would be as disastrous as the 2008 vote. There would be no change and that’s what dems and liberals are counting on.

    • Hey. I work at an auto plant in a right to work state. Watching the candidates close. Romney has some liberal points and conservative points.Same with Gingrich. He was all global warming and healthcare too. People who say he’s all that conservative or a lot more than Romney are not being honest. Even Santoroum was against right to work. He made a pro union vote as a senator. Thing is none of them are perfect. Neither was Reagan. Former Democrat. Signed pro-abortion legislation as governor. Raised taxes as governor. People need to do some growing up here. Romney would way better than Obama. Period. So would Gingrich. So would Santoroum. So would just about anyone other than Obama. Let them fight it out and then I’m supporting whoever the winner is for the Repubs. Period. Thank you for your time.

      • QUOTE Will: Romney has some liberal points and conservative points.Same with Gingrich.

You’re right, except Romney has MANY liberal leaning ways…

Go read up on him as a Massachusettes Governor, would ya? He knew how to play politics in a liberal state with the liberals to the point of getting most every outcome he wanted. You apparently know about Gingrich (Who doesn’t?), but I am not convinced you know all about Romney.

You may accuse us of not being honest, but I am accusing you of not knowing as much as you should about Romney.

And my response is~ Ignorance is blissful….

        • Kay112 you are an Obama plant. You just outed yourself. Look at your quote:
” once I agree with Soros! Romney and Obama are almost one and the same! Here in the South, If Florida wasn’t having an open primary, Romney would lose by a wide margin. Unfortunately all the moderate Democrats and Liberal Democrats + the commies will be voting for him. It’s difficult for a Republican to win against Romney down there when he is a wolf (wolf=Democrat) in sheeps clothing.”

Florida is a CLOSED primary. It is a legit primary. And Romney is polling even steven with conservative voters. UM I would ban this person right away. They are tyring to stir up chaos in here. They have been caught lying right in the open. Romney is way better than Obama. Look at his actual record. Gingrich is way better too. And so is Santorum. But this fake conservative calling themself Kay112 is an Obamabot plant and that post is the proof. Isn’t that exactly what WHI warned you about UM? That Obamabots were going to be all over your website posting these kind of comments to stir up trouble?

Hey eveyrone – Kay112 has been proven to be an Obama plant. UM should ban them. they are tring to stir up trouble in here and get people to say they wont for the Republican nomination because they are no differnt than Obama. WHI warned us all about this and now its coming true again. Kay112 is an Obama plant!

          • “Proven”? Hardly. Accused? Certainly. Justified? Doesn’t appear to be, based on the aggreagte of kay112′s posts here. Perhaps an honest mistake?

I’d be a bit more cautious about that, as someone that didn’t know better could easily accuse you of shilling for Romney (which many feel is the same as shilling for Obama, since he’s the guy the democrats and Soros have stated publicly they want to run against) based on your comments on this thread alone. Just sayin’…

      • Will, I agree with you… none of the candidates are perfect but any of them will be way better than Obama. A second term for Obama would be disasterous for our country because he is a dangerous person with sinister (dare I say evil) intent.

As an “unaffiliated” voter in CA, I probably won’t be able to vote for a candidate in the Primary election but I will support the person that ultimately wins the Republican nomination. My “almost” greatest fear is that there will be massive fraud to assure Obama’s re-election but my “absolute” greatest fear is that there won’t even be an election and we will just end up with Dictator Obama and his equally sinister associates.
        :(

      • Will, I agree with you. NONE of the candidates are perfect. Personally, I like Santorum the best of the Final Four; however, we must all unite behind whoever the nominee is, and REMAIN united. Anyone remember the old song lyrics? “United we stand, divided we fall”.

    • “We would not allow”? Screw that. How about this: you have a right to NOT carry insurance, and if you end up in the emergency room, you must pay your bill or face jail time?

But this nonsense of the federal government mandating purchases is DANGEROUS. What else could the government mandate in the name of national security, or economic viability? Could they not say that it’s an issue of national security for us to get off oil, so therefore every household is mandated to buy an electric car? Or similarly, must buy that car to support American jobs? Could they not mandate that everyone purchase and install a GPS tracking device for vehicles? Or for people? Could they not mandate that everyone must purchase “carbon offset credits”?

    • To understand Gingrich’s support of a unconstitutional mandate, know that Gingrich’s various political enities (political action groups), took in 37 million Dollars over an eight year period beginning in the early 2000′s from the medical insurance industry.

Also, know that while Obama Care was based on Romney Care, it was primarily written on a policy framework supplied & supported by the medical insurance industry, itself, that’s right, remember, the medical insurance industry supported Obama Care.

      Why?

Because Obama care & Romney care set up medical insurance CARTELS, which are anti-competitive, and with the mandate, these cartels can then divide up a captured market guranteeing profit without competition and higher premium prices for Americans.

The answer is more competition with new companies entering the marketplace, not fewer insurance companies which will be the result of the cartel model, that is both Obama & Romney care.

With both Gingrich & Romney (more so with Romney) as the nominee, it would take the health care issue off the table because despite each claiming to want to repeal Obams care, the Democrats and Obama could point to each man’s record and say it’s all campaign promiese that will never be fulfilled.

Remember, it was the health care debate that energized the Tea Party movement and fuelled the 2010 Republican wave that brought in a 64 seat gain.

You can’t let that voter energy sit on the sidelines in the presidential election.

Ron Paul instinctively believes in free markets and more competition. That’s what we need — not polititions making promises which contradict their previous record.

Ron Paul will follow through to repeal Obama care, RINO’s like Romney & Gingrich will just kick the can down the road. like RINO’s typically do.

    • Nice post Jimbo. I like Ron Paul as a Congressman. But he has never gotten anything done in all those years in DC. And he has taken the pork just like everybody else. Both Gingrich and ROmney have records of getting it done. Both guys gone too liberal at times, but overall I like their record. Romney signed off on healthcare for his state. Its what the people of that state wanted. Thats totally different than what Obama shoved down the whole damn country a couple years ago. The country was against it. Let the states decide for themself! States rights!!!! Gingrich helped to snap down welfare cost in the 90s. Hes got some baggage but not so much as Obama. Drugs, gay sex all that stuff. By how you describe it Ronald Reagan was a RINO. I think Reagans was the greatest president of the last 100 years. And its not even close. IMO. Still, you made a good post.

    • No he is not. YOu are another Obama plant? Romney signed off on a state law that the people living in that state wanted. Other states have done this too by the way. Obama passed a law the country did not want. Big damn difference. Now run back to Obama land. Its about states rights vs federal rights. Romney followed states rights. OBama forcing states to follow federal law and give up states to decide for themself. Big big big difference!

    • We have — primarily owing to the mainstream media and cowardly Congress — turned the Presidency into a near-Monarchy.

One way to repeal ObamaCare, and it is a very tall task, is electing enough Tea Party candidates to the Senate and House such that there are veto-proof 2/3 majority votes to do so. Then it doesn’t matter who’s President … and spending can finally be cut as necessary to save our bankrupt country.

We might not get there in 2012, but if the 2010 enthusiasm continues to be built upon, perhaps 2014 or 2016?

    • Romney is not a conservative and never has been. Before he ran for office he was an Independent and his wife said they had never known any Republicans. He was against Reagan, he has Charlie Crist advisors advising his campaign, and one close advisor said recently in an interview, they would not be able to repeal the whole of Obamacare. They would leave parts in place and build on it.

So if you think Romney is going to govern as a conservative YOU ARE MISTAKEN. Romney will be a disaster at this time in history and to think any different is simply suspending disbelief.

    • Reader YOU ARE A LIAR AND PATHETIC.

      • Romney had been a lifelong independent before he decided to run for Ted Kennedy’s Senate seat in Massachusetts in 1994, the Boston Globe reported at the time.

When Romney debated Kennedy, Kennedy accused his opponent of trying to return the country to the policies of Reagan-Bush. Romney retorted: “I was an independent during the time of Reagan-Bush. I’m not trying to return to Reagan-Bush.”

      • The Los Angeles Times reported that after Romney entered the ’94 Senate race, his wife Ann said: “We didn’t know a single Republican when we jumped in.”

The Times also disclosed that Romney even considered running as an independent “before rejecting the idea as impractical.”

      • When House Speaker Newt Gingrich was promoting his “Contract with America” in 1994, Romney’s aides said he “had not read the document and had no plans to support it,” the Globe reported.

The Washington Times observed that Romney “criticized the Republican campaign agenda, the ‘Contract with America,’ as too partisan.”

      • Brent Bozell’s Conservative Victory Committee attacked Romney in 1994 for “running away from conservative Republican themes” and espousing a “left-wing agenda.”

      • Washington Post columnist David Broder observed during the 1994 Senate campaign: “Eager to show that he is a moderate independent and no ideologue, Romney stressed his support for universal health insurance and abortion rights, criticized the Republican ‘Contract with America,’ and was more outspoken than Kennedy in arguing that the Boy Scouts should not exclude homosexual youths.”

      • In 1992, Romney voted in the Democratic presidential primary for Paul Tsongas, one of the most liberal Democrats in the Senate, saying Tsongas’ views were more closer to his own than Bill Clinton’s.

      • Romney donated to the 1992 campaign of U.S. Rep. Dick Swett, a New Hampshire Democrat; Rep. John LaFalce, a New York Democrat; and Democrat Doug Anderson, who was running for the Senate from Utah.

Romney defended the donations, saying: “I don’t think they’re mortal sins,” according to the Boston Herald. Press reports suggested he made the donations because of personal relationships or business reasons.

      • The Deseret News in Utah reported that Romney’s 2002 campaign for governor in Massachusetts “features an endorsement from a self-described ‘liberal Democrat’ — Salt Lake Mayor Rocky Anderson.”

Romney returned the favor, endorsing Anderson’s re-election campaign in 2003.

Anderson later called for the impeachment of President George W. Bush for “abuses of power” and “human rights abuses.”

      • Romney in 1994 “disassociated himself from Reagan and Bush policies and said he would be independent of Republican Senate leaders,” the Boston Globe reported.

      • LOL. You link to a hardline anti-gay guy who complains Romney is too liberal with some judge appointments. I can link to site that complains Romney is way too conservative. See how that plays out. The Soros people are out in droves now trying to destroy Romney because he is the biggest threat to Obumo. All the others are fine but Romney is the one they are worried about. Here’s that link I was talking about – see Romney is just way too darned conservative! :)

    • I wear a large Romney button in the “heart of darkness,” which is the wholly Democratic Party position in western Broward & Palm Beach counties. Many women look at my Mitt button & whisper to me that they’d vote for Mitt.

These women are DNA Democrats. Never ever vote for Republicans, but they don’t like Obama’s policies on the economy, spending money, nor on Israel, & would vote for Mitt.

    • Romney is on record while campaigning for Mass. calling himself a Independent with Progressive views. The guy is nothing but another RINO like Scott Brown.
