Following a skewed NBC/WSJ poll late last week showing the public was blaming Republicans for the government shutdown more than Democrats, the Senate Democrats decided they no longer just wanted a “clean” continuing resolution to end the partial government shutdown – now they want MORE government spending. Here’s a break-down of what brought them to that point from sources inside the Capitol:
(Democrats are now demanding MORE money from the American taxpayer before they will re-open the government)
Early last week, Democrats were growing increasingly wobbly over the ongoing impasse with their Republican counterparts. Polling then indicated Barack Obama’s approval rating had plummeted. The White House in turn issued statements indicating a new found openness to considering a temporary agreement to open and fund the federal government. Some in the media, including this blog, deemed that a clear sign Barack Obama was caving to the mounting political pressure against his administration.
A couple days later, and another poll of (mostly) Democrats, resulted in the predictable result of showing more people blamed Republicans for the partial government shutdown. This apparently emboldened Senate Democrats (Harry Reid) who rebuked any idea of a shorter term agreement. Then over the weekend, Reid and his fellow Senate Democrats began indicating they not only wanted to see government re-opened, and the debt ceiling resolved, but they are now demanding MORE deficit spending. Since 2011, the budget has been moderately trimmed following the sequestration agreement signed onto by both parties at that time.
Ironically, it’s those moderate reductions in the overall federal budget that has allowed President Obama to pat himself on the back for “the largest year to year reduction in the federal deficit” in decades. Barack Obama is taking credit for a reduction he was against, and whose own political party is now attempting to reverse. If the nation enjoyed a more open and honest media, this political hypocrisy would be shoved right back into their faces, but as of yet, that has not happened.
Over the weekend, sources indicated the White House was informed of the Senate Democrats’ new insistence for more government spending. (Harry Reid is telling Barack Obama what he wants – not the other way around, another indicator of Barack Obama’s lame duck status in D.C.) These Democrats want to effectively lock in these spending increases before the Midterm Election cycle begins in earnest and force enough Republicans to go along with it to allow them to claim the spending increases were “bi-partisan”. The demands have also placed increasing pressure on Speaker John Boehner, who had initially agreed with Democrats to a short term solution over the budget and debt ceiling, and was willing to try and get enough Republicans to sign on. Now with Democrats suddenly demanding MORE spending, Speaker Boehner finds himself once again having been played by Democrats, and viewed with increasing distrust and frustration by fiscally conservative Republicans.
In essence, it is Harry Reid who is holding the United States hostage, putting a gun to the head of America and asking for more money we do not have. -UM
