What resolution is 1200 dpi
The smaller dpi number is the optical resolution of the CCD sensor cells. A 1200 dpi scanner takes 1200 color samples per inch (creates 1200 pixels per inch) horizontally from the width being scanned. A 1200 dpi CCD sensor really cannot do anything else but scan at 1200 dpi.

Most professional first-person shooter players buy a large mousepad and set their mouse DPI to anywhere between 800 and 1200 because a lower DPI gives you precision. The “ideal” DPI setting will have more to do with what kind of game you're playing, your monitor's resolution and your gaming style.

Well, it depends on what you are printing. If your images are at 100% or smaller, 1200 is really overdoing it. If your images are at like 200% or better, you may be fine. If you are printing a very high-end art book that requires finely detailed images, 1200 may be a little high, but not objectionable.

DPI doesn't really matter, though 400–800 is the normal amount. Some people go to 1600 but it doesn't really matter.
